Major 9th, 11th, 13th Chords

Major 9th - Major 11th - Major 13th Chords

The maj9 chord is a five note chord. It is built by starting with the major triad and then adding the major (natural) seventh and also the ninth (second). The major 9th chord differs from the add9 chord in that it contains the natural seventh where the add9 (add2) chord does not. All ninth, eleventh and thirteenth chords contain a seventh.

The maj11 chord is a five note chord. It consists of the major triad with the major (natural) seventh and the 11th (fourth) added to it. The major 11th chord differs from the sus4 chord in that it contains both the major third and natural seventh but the sus4 chord contains neither.

The maj13 chord is also a five note chord. It is made starting with the major triad and adding the major (natural) seventh and the 13th (sixth) notes as well. The major thirteenth chord differs from the major 6th chord in that it contains the natural seventh while the major 6th chord does not. The major 13th chord is enharmonically equivalent to the minor 9th chord of its relative minor. For example the Fmaj13 chord has the same notes as the Dmin9 chord.
